Jess Cornelius' (Teeth and Tongue) favourite things

Jess Cornelius is the New Zealand born musician behind the wonderous Melbourne band, Teeth and Tongue. Now based in Melbourne, Jess released Teeth and Tongue's Grids album in March this year to critical acclaim, scoring impressive reviews and Feature Album status with numerous radio stations and publications across the country (including us - read Fee B-Squared's piece on the album here).

The album spawned a number of singles and stunning videos, including "Good Man", "Newborn", "The Party Is You" and "Family Home".

Since the album's release Jess has toured the country and supported everyone from Megan Washington to Augie March and Vance Joy, playing venues and events as diverse as Boogie Festival, Big Sound, White Night, MONA and live from the Triple R Performance Space.

They'll cap off 2014 with a headline show at The Shadow Electric on November 15th and at Meredith Music Festival on December 12th.
For all upcoming show details, visit the Teeth and Tongue website.

In the lead up to the final Teeth and Tongue shows for 2014, Jess shared some of her favourite music with us.

Nina Simone "For A While", Live at Ronnie Scott's

I’ll never get sick of watching this. It tears my heart out. Here’s a woman in so much pain, but we benefit from it. That’s a weird feeling.

Sui Zhen

Becky Sui Zhen is a musician and artist from Melbourne, but she used to live in Sydney. That’s okay. A lot of her music is electronic based, and she really knows her way around a synthesiser.  Sui Zhen’s latest single " Infinity Street" has just come out on Two Bright Lakes, but it’s work checking out her whole
website because she makes clever videos and all sorts of aesthetically pleasing stuff.

PictureSibylle Baier in 1969
Sibylle Baier —The Colour Green

German actress Sibylle Baier
recorded these songs at home on a reel to reel tape recorder in the early 70s, and they never saw the light of day until 30 years later when her son transferred them to cassette and gave them to family members for Christmas. The album ending up being released worldwide in 2006…via J Mascis, of course.

Happy Birthday- Subliminal Message

I first heard Vermont band Happy Birthday when I was asked to review their 2010 self-titled album (out on Sub Pop
) for a magazine. It’s kind of pretty and really wonky at the same time. Some of the melodies are so sticky-sweet you’ll probably want to wash your hands, but the whole thing is overlaid with a thick layer of grungy noise, so it’s kinda okay. Actually it’s really good.
Todd Terje feat. Bryan Ferry – Johnny & Mary

One of my all time favourite covers. This is by Norwegian producer and DJ Todd Terje. If you don’t know Robert Palmer’s incredible original version, it’s fun to listen to that too and switch back and forth for full 80’s melancholic saturation.

The Harpoons "Can We Work This Out"

I’m a bit obsessed with this band. Such a great pop sensibility and they obviously craft the songs and beats meticulously. And Bec’s voice is outta this world. You gotta watch it for the slightly unnerving video too.

Girls play "Vomit" in an abandoned Brooklyn church (Live)

A friend just put me onto this clip and it’s pretty stunning. Beautifully shot and edited, beautifully performed, and some serious gospel back-up singing at the end.

Lady of Fortune by Fair Maiden

I kept hearing this song on 3RRRfm and not realising it was an Adelaide band. That city puts out some pretty incredible music. This band’s got Stephanie Crase from Summer Flake playing drums, so it’s no wonder they’re good. I love the vocal layering and production too.

"Waves" by Superette

In NZ, a Superette is a mini supermarket. I don’t know if they use that term anywhere else. It’s also the name of one of my favourite NZ 90s bands. This song came out on their 1996 album Tiger, and also on a soundtrack to the mini-series ‘Topless Women Talk About Their Lives’.  Superette’s track ‘
Saskatchewan’ is also worth checking out—it’s a bit of a retro slow-burn banger.
"Taumarunui" by by Sarah Mary Chadwick. From the album Hit and Miss.

Sarah Mary Chadwick fronted an incredible NZ band called Batrider, many years ago. I think she’s been doing solo stuff for a while, but she’s just put up this album of b-sides and demos from the last two years. Taumarunui is a small town in the North Island of NZ. I guess Sarah grew up there. This song is brutally bleak and sad, like the town. I love it.

"Solsbury Hill" by Lou Reed.

I have to admit I knew almost nothing about Peter Gabriel until I came across one of my faves doing his track. It’s off an album called …And I’ll Scratch Yours, which is a whole bunch of bands doing Peter Gabriel covers. The guitar sound on this just kills me.

"First Love Song" by by Laura Jean

Laura is a mega musical babe whom I’m lucky enough to call a mate. She’s just released her 4th album, and it’s a killer. This video was directed by her sister, Alice.

Teeth & Tongue will play at The Gasometer on Sunday 25 January 2015 with Fraser A Gorman.
