Pixies - Doolittle (Feature Album 'from the vault' 12 August 2013) by Patrick McKaskill
Pixies' seminal 1989 LP Doolittle is an album which set new trends with its interesting song structures and thought provoking lyrics. Following their debut mini-album Come On Pilgrim (1987) and the moderate success of debut long player Surfer Rosa in 1988, (now certified gold), Pixies released an album which took a step back from the claustrophobic and overproduced sounds of the mid eighties, and delivered a work of art which at times could be soft and minimalist, and others full of strange dissonant tension.
The album starts off with bassist Kim Deal’s incredibly simplistic bass lines in ‘Debaser’, an aspect of her playing that helps give Pixies’ tracks a profound sense of rhythm and steadiness when it is needed. The lyrical themes of this opening track help give insight into the album’s ethos, being about the movie Un Chien Andalou by director Luis Buñuel and artist Salvador Dali. This film is a dark piece of avant-garde cinema which was criticised for its representation of sex and self-mutilation, two themes which feature heavily throughout the album in songs such as 'Wave of Mutilation' and 'I Bleed'.
